Richard Smallwood Receives Honorary Doctorate

Richard Smallwood is known as one of gospel’s greats. A composer with a strong classical leaning, Smallwood is credited with penning some of the church’s most popular and moving anthems like Center of My Joy, Calvary, I Love The Lord, Healing, Total Praise, Anthem Of Praise and Yolanda Adams’ That Name. The pioneer has been honored a number of times recently.

He was honored by the Stellar Awards last year with the James Cleveland Award and earlier this year, he was honored by the GRAMMY Awards during the Recording Academy’s GRAMMY Salute To Gospel music. Not only is Smallwood a noted pianist and composer, but last year, he added the title minister his name when he received his Masters of Divinity from Howard University.

The "Maestro" has been recognized yet again. Last Monday, Smallwood was presented with an honorary Doctorate of Sacred Music Degree from the Richmond Virginia Seminary during their commencement exercises. He says that he’s quite humbled by the honor. “I was pleasantly surprised and extremely honored that Richmond Virginia Seminary would select me to be a recipient of an honorary Doctorate Degree in Sacred Music,” says Smallwood. “It was an inspiring ceremony and a moment that I will always cherish.”

Richard Smallwood Receives GRAMMY
"President’s Merit Award"

Richard Smallwood was among those honored on Feb. 4 as part of the "Grammy Salute to Gospel Music." The gospel innovator and composer was recognized along with Shirley Caesar, EMI CMG founder Billy Ray Hearn, and EMI CMG President and CEO Bill Hearn. All were presented with The Recording Academy President's Merit Awards for their contributions to the gospel genre. The event featured other gospel music notables including Martha Munizzi, Walter Hawkins, Edwin Hawkins, Kirk Whalum and Jonathan Butler.

"In keeping with the mission of The Recording Academy, we will salute and celebrate specific genres of music and pay homage to some of the legends who have made significant contributions to these musical forms," said Recording Academy President Neil Portnow. "Our celebrations are a primary part of GRAMMY Week events, which highlight music's cultural impact on our society. We are so pleased to honor great artists as well as recognize timeless music."

Separate events recognizing honorees in the classical, jazz and gospel genres were held by The Recording Academy as part of the events that led up to the 48th Annual Grammy Awards.
